Sun Protection
Living in Australia, we are subjected to harsh ultraviolet (UV) exposure.
The sunlight can have a profound effect on our skin resulting in premature ageing, skin
cancers and a number of light-induced disorders of the skin.
Dr Banky recommends the following to combat the effects of ultraviolet exposure:
- Avoid or reduce the hours spent in the sun during the hours of 10am-4pm when the UV
intensity is at its peak
- Apply SPF 50+ broadspectrum (UVA and UVB) sunscreen liberally over any exposed skin
at least 20 minutes before going outdoors. It is important that sunscreen is
re-applied every 2 hours, or more frequently if sweating or swimming
- Wear protective clothing – a broad-rimmed hat, long-sleeves, pants and sunglasses
- Avoid tanning – either by the sun, solariums or any other tanning machines. A tan is
a sign of damaged skin
- Regular self-skin examinations – knowing your own ‘spots’ is one of the best methods
to detect skin cancers at an early stage
