To become a dermatologist, a doctor must be accepted for admission into the post-graduate training program run by the Australasian College of Dermatologists. The training program involves four years of intensive supervised study, research and clinical practice and culminates in a two part written and practical clinical examination.

From the time that a doctor commences their undergraduate medical degree, it takes around 13 years of study and medical training to become a Dermatologist.

Doctors who have successfully completed the training program of the Australasian College of Dermatologists are known as Fellows of the College (FACD). Fellows of the College are recognised by Medicare Australia and State Medical Boards as specialists in dermatology.
